VR Arcade Space Requirements: How Much Floor Space Do You Need?

A compact VR station plans at 8-12 sqm, multi-seat and cinema formats at 15-25 sqm each, and a workable six-station venue fits inside 100-140 sqm of usable area. A free-roam arena needs 70-90 sqm on its own. Plan against the usable figure, after columns and queue space.

Per-station footprints set the floor before the budget does

Space is the binding constraint for more venue plans than capital is, because the footprint of each format is fixed by the equipment while the budget can be adjusted. The published planning figures are compact stations at roughly 8-12 sqm each, and multi-seat or cinema formats at 15-25 sqm each including queue and shared space.

Free-roam arenas sit in a different category altogether. A 4-10 player arena needs 70-90 sqm of dedicated floor, which is more than most single formats consume and cannot be subdivided once committed.

Format	Planning footprint
Compact single station	8-12 sqm
Multi-seat / cinema format	15-25 sqm (incl. queue and shared space)
Free-roam arena, 4-10 players	70-90 sqm dedicated
Six-station venue, total usable area	100-140 sqm

Parameters are for reference only. Footprints include operating clearance; confirm exact dimensions against the equipment specification before signing a lease.

Venue-size bands show what each floor tier supports

Published startup-cost bands are organised by floor area, and reading them as space bands makes the format options at each tier clear.

Under 50 sqm supports one or two simulators added to an existing venue, with total startup costs of $15,000-$ 40,000. Floors of 100-200 sqm carry a small VR corner of 3-6 stations at $50,000-$ 120,000. At 300-500 sqm a standalone VR arena or theme park becomes viable at $150,000-$ 350,000 or more.

Usable floor area	What it supports	Total startup cost
Under 50 sqm	1-2 simulators inside an existing venue	$15,000 -$ 40,000
100-200 sqm	Small VR corner, 3-6 stations	$50,000 -$ 120,000
300-500 sqm	Standalone VR arena / theme park	$150,000 -$ 350,000+

Total startup cost covers equipment, freight, fit-out, content and opening marketing; it is not the equipment price alone.

The bands also expose a gap tier: floors above the add-on model but below the standalone band support only a partial configuration, unless the operator commits most of the floor to a single free-roam footprint.

The dimensions most floor plans forget

Floor area is the headline number, but three other physical constraints disqualify sites that look big enough on the listing.

Queue and circulation come first. The published per-station figures include queue and shared space for multi-seat formats, but a venue that wants riders to wait comfortably at peak should treat the published band as a floor, not a target. Corridors between stations also carry safety function: motion platforms need clearance around moving parts, and that clearance is not rent-earning.

Power and structure come second. Motion platforms require reinforced floors, safety clearances and stable power supply, which is why fit-out cost varies so widely: premium free-roam builds run $300,000-$ 800,000 while compact pod installations are usually under $50,000. A cheap floor that needs heavy structural work can cost more to bring online than a pricier shell that is ready.

Shape comes third. Long thin units waste space on circulation; square or near-square floors absorb station clusters efficiently. Two units of identical area can differ by several stations of practical capacity purely on shape.

Match the format to the floor, not the floor to the format

The reliable sequence is to measure what the site genuinely offers and then pick formats that fit it, because the reverse order commits you to a layout the space cannot deliver.

A practical way to start: mark the usable rectangle after removing columns, entrances, service areas and required circulation, then compare that rectangle against the per-format footprints. What remains is the format list. A floor with 110 usable sqm supports a six-station layout; the same floor with an awkward column line may support four.

Lease strategy follows the same logic. Space is far more expensive to add later than capacity, so leasing enough floor for the target configuration and fitting out only the opening count keeps both options open (see the station-count question as a separate decision driven by demand). Renewal terms matter for the same reason: a format that outgrows its floor in year two needs somewhere to go.

MoviePower has delivered over 5,000 projects for operators in 100+ countries, and its VR arcade business solutions are organised by floor area. The 300-500 sqm standard experience center and the 500-800 sqm growth center show worked layouts for those bands, and the commercial VR equipment range lists the footprint of each format.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much floor space does a VR arcade need?

A workable six-station venue needs roughly 100-140 sqm of usable area (AMA Amusement 2026). Compact single stations plan at 8-12 sqm each, multi-seat and cinema formats at 15-25 sqm each including queue and shared space, and a free-roam arena needs 70-90 sqm of dedicated floor on its own.

How much space does a single VR station take?

Compact single stations plan at roughly 8-12 sqm each, and multi-seat or cinema formats at 15-25 sqm each including queue and shared space. Confirm exact dimensions against the equipment specification, because published figures include operating clearance but not unusual structural constraints.

Can I open a VR arcade in a small space under 50 sqm?

Yes, as an add-on format. Under 50 sqm supports one or two simulators inside an existing venue, with total startup costs of $15,000-$ 40,000. What it does not support is a standalone VR arcade: the published band for a small 3-6 station corner starts at 100-200 sqm of floor.

What space do free-roam VR arenas need?

A 4-10 player free-roam arena needs 70-90 sqm of dedicated floor. That is committed space that cannot be subdivided for other formats, and fit-out for premium free-roam builds runs $300,000-$ 800,000, so the format suits venues that can dedicate a large contiguous area.

What should I check besides floor area?

Three things disqualify sites that look big enough: queue and circulation room, because the per-station figures include shared space but peak comfort needs more; structural and power readiness, because motion platforms need reinforced floors and stable supply; and floor shape, because long thin units lose practical capacity to circulation.
